Twenty-two of the thirty
This is the shoe itself, before any brush touches it, and it is where most of the thirty will go. One panel of calf from collar to toe with no seam across the top, so the leather shows nothing but its own grain. The toe and the heel are darkened by hand with a cloth, pale through the centre and honey at both ends.
The sole is sewn to a welt that is itself sewn by hand, all the way round, which is the construction the shoe is built on and the reason it can be resoled for years. The welt stitch, the sole edge and the heel block carry one colour, a dark peacock teal, and nothing else does.
Made to the measurements of both your feet, taken at a private fitting. Twenty-two numbered pairs in this finish.

The shoe underneath
- Construction
- Hand-welted. The sole is stitched to a welt that is sewn to the insole by hand, eight to ten stitches to the inch, in waxed linen. Not glued, not Blake-stitched. A worn sole is cut off and a new one sewn on.
- Upper
- One panel of full-grain calf from collar to toe, 1.3 to 1.6 mm. No apron seam, no moc stitch, no seam across the top. Tanned in Pakistan.
- Colour
- Pale through the centre, honey at both ends. The toe and the heel are darkened by hand with a cloth, so no two pairs shade the same.
- Waist
- Bevelled under the arch: the sole is cut narrow by hand so the shoe shows a curved line along its side.
- Heel
- 22 mm, stacked from layers of leather and lacquered dark teal, with a dark replaceable top piece.
