Ordinary daylight exposure from actually wearing the shoes is a slower, milder version of the same effect, and it is normal for any painted or dyed surface to soften slightly over months of regular wear. What keeps that gradual, rather than sudden, is the sealing step every pair receives, which protects the pigment layer from the everyday scuffing that would otherwise expose fresh paint to light and abrasion at once.

Colour choice affects how visible fading is more than it affects the fading itself. Deep, saturated colours and true black show any lightening more obviously simply because the contrast to their original state is larger.
